College Sports Realignment Roundup for March 14, 2025
There were several realignment news items to end the week with swimming changes back in the spotlight for the third time in the last week. In other news, one western school will launch its athletics program in 2025-26 with two sports.
Maryville Cuts Swimming Programs
Marvyille University (Town and Country, Missouri) will discontinue its men’s and women’s swimming teams beginning with the 2025-26 academic year. Both teams competed in the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC), which is the school’s primary conference. The GLVC will see Southwest Baptist University (Bolivar, Missouri) add men’s and women’s swimming & diving programs in 2025-26 to keep the membership numbers at 11 and 10, respectively. Maryville’s decision comes on the heels of Cal Poly’s decision to cut swimming & diving on March 7, 2025.
New College of Florida Adds Swimming Team
It has not been all bad news for swimming programs in the last week. The New College of Florida (Sarasota, Florida) will add men’s and women’s swimming beginning with the 2025-26 academic year. Both teams will compete in the Sun Conference, which will have 10 members in 2025-26. New College of Florida will join Ave Maria, Keiser, Life, Loyola-New Orleans, Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD Savannah), St. Thomas (FL), Thomas (GA), Tennessee-Southern, and William Carey.
Nevada State Adds Athletics
Nevada State University (Henderson, Nevada) became the latest school to add athletics. The Scorpions currently have no affiliation with a governing body and will start their athletics journey as an “independent” program. The first sports to be offered will be men’s track & field (both indoor and outdoor) and women’s flag football beginning with the 2025-26 academic year. Nevada State intends to add more sports in the future but did not provide an estimated timeline. Nevada State opened in September 2002 as Nevada State College and became Nevada State University starting on July 1, 2023. The school says it will be the only four-year institution in Nevada to offer men’s track & field and women’s flag football.
